:My advice for the future: many new editors have as much knowledge as you have, with perhaps a bit less familiarity with the letter of the law on wikipedia. ESPECIALLY on talk pages, where there should be more leeway than in the article itself.

:I'm sorry to follow you here but I was reading Carl's page and I was just shocked to see this being said. It's a real shame, because I'd have enjoyed participating in the Middle-earth project on wikipedia. Hi Carl, Tom here, we used to help each other once upon a time, with wikipedia and articles.

Are you on facebook? just created an account there so if you send me a link to yours I can add you up.

Tom Jenkins (reply) 10:50, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Carl! Thanks for replying. Tried going to your page but apparently the Add Friend button is disabled. Check your privacy settings. Tell me when you're ready and I'll add you up.
Thanks! -- Tom Jenkins (reply) 15:42, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Will do it when I get home, I've got it set to only accept friend requests from friends at the mo, so will need to open it up a bit. Carl Sixsmith (talk) 15:57, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
settings changed. Carl Sixsmith (talk) 19:32, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! you could change it back if you don't need to keep it open. Happy to link up -- Tom Jenkins (reply) 20:04, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Talk:Saruman

You should sign and spell-check your last comment. And thanks for the much-needed mediation; people seem so thin-skinned these days! Or is it just youthful insecurity? What should I have said differently? -- Elphion (talk) 01:08, 3 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well, you could have respected my first admission that I was new to wikipedia, or my desire to engage in a discussion on the talk page about the topic, or answered the points I was making (IE when I said 'that isn't fair to say' you appropriated the comment to an argument I wasn't even making in that sentence), or not accused me of pursuing an irrelevant topic when it was already under discussion by you and another editor. If you want to talk about something, I have a talk page just like anyone else.
I'm sure you're quite knowledgeable about Tolkien (I've read through some of the edits and discussions you've participated in). But, that doesn't make you and the other people who are established editors of these articles the sole source of information or the only people permitted to engage in discussions about what is included and what isn't. I don't normally edit wikipedia articles or even attempt to have discussions about them, and I'm starting to think that's a much better policy.
My advice for the future: many new editors have as much knowledge as you have, with perhaps a bit less familiarity with the letter of the law on wikipedia. ESPECIALLY on talk pages, where there should be more leeway than in the article itself.
